Re: Types of magic in fantasy.
In the Conan story Hour of the Dragon , Zeiata the witch and Hadrathus the preist of Asura don't seem to be evil; the author suggests that both the witch and the cult of Asura are victims of prejudice and rumor. As PCs in a game, Zeiata would most likely be a druid and Hadrathus, a cleric. I wonder...

Re: Types of magic in fantasy.
From my reading, good magic would have a code of conduct (similar to the paladin), neutral magic would have a chance of 'misfiring', and evil magic would corrupt.

Re: Types of magic in fantasy.
I like your take on it. :D Thanks! I think making a completely generic game is a hard thing to do, and a hard thing to sell. So you've got to give a game some kind of "vibe". Meanwhile, I think DCC with it's lighter design than many other games, can easily support alternate rules to make ...

Types of magic in fantasy.
A lot of people have remarked that the division between magic-users, clerics, druids etc doesn't reflect the source literature. From my reading, there seem to be three broad types of magic in fantasy, that are basically 'alignment'-based: * inherently evil magic. * morally neutral magic. * inherentl...

Re: Spells, and what to do with them.... [long]
I'm in favour of getting rid of spell level Remember that spell level does serve a purpose -- it puts spells into piles so that young wizards can't try the hardest spells right away. So you use an idea like jmucchiello's class dice for wizards as the numbers are already there on the chart. You can ...

Re: 3d6, in order
Perhaps it would be good to have a statement in the rules that scores mean different things than they do in other games.

Re: 3d6, in order
The average result of 4d6 drop the lowest is 12.245 (rounded), as opposed to 10.5 for 3d6.
Thus the total difference in average stats between the two methods is 1.745 per attribute, or 10.47 for six attributes.

Re: 3d6, in order
The one comment on the ability scores was around not being able to raise them via Levels. If Joseph is looking for something to add in that might expand out the level progression through the 6-10 range. He might consider adding a few levels where a character can add +2 to an attribute with the cave...

Re: If wizards have patrons...
They're all reasonable answers, but the whole thing seems a bit more 'justifying how D&D does it' than 'simulating how Appendix N does it'.

This is very good, but it doesn't seem to apply the Birth Augur to saves or Hit Points when required.

who seem to be Lovecraftian, and if clerics' gods include Cthulhu, what's the difference between clerics and wizards?

Re: Spells, and what to do with them.... [long]
I favour condensing spells wherever possible. You say the 32 spells are 1st level - but how many of these cover the effects of higher level spells within their potential range ? - I've only seen the Magic Missile spell and that is hellish powerful at higher rolls. Surely a Charm Person spell encomp...

Re: A woodcutter could scale a wall?
Hm..I think of fairy-tale / medieval woodcutters as going out into the forest by themselves, and coming back with a load of wood on their back. Climbing a tree to cut it sounds more modern / industrial. So I'd expect woodcutters to be good at bearing heavy loads and finding their way in the forest, ...

Re: Reflex vs Agility, Skills vs Thief Skills
Maybe the intention is that the thief has the listed percentage chance of picking the lock, then if they fail they make the same check that anyone else would.
However, whatever the intention, it isn't clear.

Sword and sorcery classes.
Given the stated aim of the game to be like the stories in Appendix N, I think it would be good to have a section giving alternatives to the demi-human racial classes. Perhaps there could be Barbarian, Pict and Decadent classes that are similar to Dwarf, Halfling and Elf respectively?

Spellburn (p93)
It says that wizards recover 1 point of ability score per day that they don't sacrifice any further ability scores. Is this intended to be 1 point per ability, or 1 point in total? If the latter, and the wizard has lowered more than one ability, how is it decided which ability score?

Warrior titles.
On p30 it says that warrior's level titles depend on their Path, of which there are four, not directly on their alignment. But Table 1-11: Warrior Titles (p32) gives titles by alignment.

Reflex vs Agility, Skills vs Thief Skills
The discussion of skill checks on p53 doesn't spell out when to use Agility only, as opposed to when to use Reflex. Is it intended that Agility is when the character is trying to do something, and Reflex is when the character is trying to avoid something? Also the Thief skills seem to have a fixed p...

Chaotic clerics vs Paladins (pp24, 32)
Paladins are unholy to Chaotic clerics, and may be turned (p24)
Paladins are level 5 Lawful warriors (p32).
The description for warriors doesn't seem to say that level 5 Lawful warriors can be turned by Chaotic clerics.

All mundane animals are unholy to Neutral clerics (p24), yet Neutral clerics "may be druids who worship the oneness of nature" (p20) and 'Druid' is a level title (p23).

Choosing a Class (p19)
This says that you can't choose to be a dwarf, elf or halfling unless you were one as a 0-level character, however it doesn't say the reverse. So it could be interpreted as saying that 0-level dwarves can decide not to choose the 'dwarf' class and be (for example) wizards instead.

This result on the Luck Table doesn't say that you get a minimum of 1HP per level (whereas the entry for Stamina does).
