Re: Hubris: A World of Visceral Adventure has arrived!
I read that this book includes an Alchemist class. How does an Alchemist differ from the standard wizard? My hope is that it is similar to the Arnesonian magic-using class from D. H. Boggs' Dragons at Dawn . In that system, the magic-user can cast 3 spells as-needed (with a risk of exhaustion) but f...

DCC Annual: Content Wish List
I didn't find a topic like this using the search function so here goes. What would you like to see in the DCC Annual? Off the top of my head, I would like: 1) Bard 2) Ranger 3) Monk 4) Tunnels & Trolls style Rogue 5) Enough spells to make some specialist wizards 6) Wizard Variants not just with ...

Re: Need to give character a STD
Syphilis would take a while to actually kill the character although the various possible symptoms leading up to madness and death might be interesting. Then again, role playing Tabes Dorsalis might be boring. Actually, any real world STD might be a little dull in a fantasy game. I thinks some exotic...

Re: ANOTHER Mystic Class - unfinished
Nice work! Hit points seem a little light for something that will probably be expected to do a fair bit of fighting. :D FWIW: I've been working on a class like this one recently, but mine is a sub-set of the warrior class and focuses more on the Martial arts and chi magic so maybe that is coloring ...

Re: ANOTHER Mystic Class - unfinished
I was struggling with that when I lost steam. The basic idea was the mystic could send a person on a difficult but achievable and dangerous but not immediately fatal errand. I hadn't settled on mechanics (mystic rolls attempt and victim rolls save, mystic rolls attempt and no save, or mystic just pr...

ANOTHER Mystic Class - unfinished
NOTE: this is a derivative work. It combines bits of RC D&D, AD&D, Hackmaster 4th Ed, and probably others I don't remember right now. In DCC alignment has interesting implications and I wanted to reflect that in this class (pastiche as it is). Alignment determines the type of Mystic a charac...

Re: Killing the Cleric (and a few others)
Why not just play the Thief as-is, and allow him a steady stream of scrolls to read? You could even allow him to burn luck on reading scrolls, making him a very competent magician (even without spell burn). Alternately, let him memorize one spell per day and cast with his Read Scroll die? There are...

Killing the Cleric (and a few others)
Picture it: Minnesota in the early 1970s and the characters in Mr. Arneson's game are talking to each other. Fighting Man - "Well, I can fight but I can't use magic. I could be a samurai, barbarian, weapon master, knight or any other type of warrior." Magic User - " I can't fight wor...

Re: DCC RPG- having problems getting it to work for me/us.
Everyone seems to be searching for that holy grail game which incorporates simplicity and a streamlined ruleset. It already exists and we've already played it a million times. Basic D&D is about as basic an RPG can get and streamlined without resorting to just flipping a coin. Tunnels and Troll...

Re: DCC RPG- having problems getting it to work for me/us.
I would like to present two related thoughts. First, the difference in game design is that risk/benefit has been changed from a relatively fixed proportion to random and highly variable in certain areas. This changes the way you play. Slot machines that pay more also cost more so you might be more h...

Re: DCC RPG- having problems getting it to work for me/us.
Lots of good observations and advice here. There are any number of ways you could proceed. I agree that Castles and Crusades is an easy system. I also recommend Tunnels and Trolls if you want fast . Palladium Fantasy 1st edition is also decent. Other good ones include: Dragons at Dawn by D.H. Boggs ...

Re: DCC Alignment question
My impression of the works from Appendix N that I have read is that Good/Evil distinctions are of less importance than, say, in Tolkien which was quite downplayed by Gygax as an influence anyway. At any rate, there are other systems that can be substituted or added if you find the current alignment ...

I was composing a post about the importance of a writer's vision and not having a committe design away the flavor but instead I am going to mention this as being what the kids call pure "awesome sauce": Steven and Davis Chenault are caricatured in the monsters section under "Troll Lor...

Re: Paging Joseph Goodman!
We had this discussion at length in a thread called "Kill the Cleric" or something similar to that, where we tried to identify examples of a cleric found in Appendix N. We really didn't find too many, and the closest we found was really a warrior-priest or essentially a Paladin-type holy ...

Re: Paging Joseph Goodman!
I'm looking forward to this. I even bought some Zocchi dice in preparation. I do want to say something about classes though. As long as GG is going back to the source material and not doing a clone, please consider changing the cleric to something more generic. The original rules had a fighting-man,...

Downloads too much work. Double stat to Pathfinder or do separate line - most retro-clones and D20 derivatives could easily convert Pathfinder.
