Re: Origins of D&D ideas: monsters, classes, spells, etc.
I think the Rakshasa, though obviously originally from Indian folklore, might have come by way of an episode of The Night Stalker (the old Darren McGavin show). At least that's where the blessed crossbow bolt aspect came from. I also think the "Geas" spell probably owes a lot to the Clark ...

Re: Appendix N Recommendations and Adventuring Parties
I just don't think adventure fiction works very well with groups. Doc Savage is a great example - at the start of the series, he had 5 assistants, but almost immediately only half of them were used in subsequent novels I guess because it just proved unwieldy. Usually just Doc + Ham + Monk + Monk's p...

Re: Economics in DCC...Gold! Gold! Gold!
Well, Electrum really was used for coins though, at least in the ancient era. And it was pretty much literally half silver, half gold, so it should be worth half a gold piece. Which does make for awkward bookkeeping admittedly.

Re: Have your attitudes towards DCC RPG changed since Jan. 3
When I first heard rumors about DCC RPG, I was hoping for something like either 1st AD&D or BD&D. I know there are clone systems of those, but most of them suffer from not being from actual game companies, but stuff you have to buy off of Lulu and such. (I know that sounds terrible, and I ha...

Re: Designer's Blog #3: What Do You Mean, "Vancian"?
As someone who used to play Rolemaster (a little) this sort of stuff is fun at first, but quickly gets old. At least it doesn't have the draconian sort of penalties that game has. But it seems like DCC will be a lot better for short scenarios (like at Cons) than long campaigns. That's not a bad thin...

Re: Reading Appendix N
Just finished Poul Anderson's The High Crusade. It was a very good and quick read. It's a great example of how the writing of novels (and rpgs) has changed over the years. Just compare this book (192 pages) with the very similar story (aliens land on earth in the past) in the World War novels by Tu...

Re: Designer's Blog #1: What It Is, And What It Isn't
From some of the things described (and some of the playtests), I am strongly reminded by a lot of games from the early 80s that were sort of clones of D&D, but not quite. Arduin, that one from Bard Games, Palladium's system, even BRP, really. Basically taking the core stuff from D&D (six sta...

Re: Anonycon Playtest Report
Interesting, but at least in my experience (mostly with Rolemaster), having critical hits (and misses) is fun for just doing one shots, but tends to make campaigns very short lived. (Characters in Call of Cthulhu lasted longer than in Rolemaster)

Re: What happened to these boards?
That's what got me. Until I got wind of a DCC RPG in the works I pretty much avoided all RPG related sites (save for CoC, which is actually how I got wind of the DCC RPG, came back to look at Goodman's modules for CoC)Raptor wrote:4th Edition happened.

Re: 4E DCC
Looking at those covers really drives home that it's an end of an era. Not that they look bad, just a completely different vibe that the previous DCCs had. These actually look a lot like Pathfinder modules from Paizo (especially ironic given they are sticking with 3.x) Hopefully I can snap up all th...

Well, compatability is a somewhat nebulous thing. Almost anything can be compatable with something else, depending on how much work you do as GM. As is, based on the Alpha rules, it will be less compatible than 3.5 was to 3.0 (and vice-versa). Anyway, I don't see that they had a lot of choice. Since...

Etherscope, XCrawl, DragonMech, Eldritch, and Dungeoneer. Take your pick. 8) Etherscope, Xcrawl, and Dragonmech are just settings, really. Dungeoneer is based on a licensed property (the board game), which would sort of defeat the purpose. Eldritch is its own game system, but honestly, I'm not very...

Should Goodman have their own "house" system?
I'm sure they probably won't. But with the recent announcement of Pathfinder by Paizo, it seems like just about every other company that supported d20 in a big way (and are still in business) now have their own system. (Excepting Necromancer Games, which is something of an odd duck, as they are real...

Probably not much of your budget, though. That's why WOTC probably killed it - they were too cheap for their own good (at least Dungeon). $7 for several adventures? I think Dungeon was what, 96 pages? And usually about 50 were adventures. While the Goodman's DCCs are pretty reasonably priced, I thin...

It's not one of his more popular stories, but I think it's the first that quotes from the Necronomicon. Wisely did Ibn Schacabao say, that happy is the tomb where no wizard hath lain, and happy the town at night whose wizards are all ashes. For it is of old rumour that the soul of the devil-bought h...

Lovecraftian?
I got the freebie yesterday, and was impressed that it was somewhat Lovecraftian. Maybe closer to Stuart Gordon's version of Lovecraft (due to the scantily clad women), but the big bad villain was a somewhat mythos-ish cultist who had used the Worms that Walk spell (I think that's the name of it, it...

I hope next year you encourage stores to make more of an event of it. I went to my FLGS (or closest thing to one), which is actually not a bad store for RPGs, despite also selling comics and anime and stuff like that, and they didn't have an outside sign for it. The clerk didn't tell anyone. They ju...

The treasure level is a bit high in the module. But I think you ran the fight the wrong way. He's a fighter/rogue, he shouldn't be doing a stand up fight with an entire party. He should run away, get guards, fight with them, and when the guards are dead, run away again and repeat. And if a PC Barbar...
