Re: 20 point spell burn

Have there been any clarification on this? Interpretation A is: When you burn 20 points, your d20 automatically becomes a 20. The spell check then becomes 20 (the roll) plus 20 (the burn) plus various sundry bonuses. The problem is, no spell ever needs more than 38+. So this interpretation makes no ...

Re: Suggestions for Frazettian Sword & Sorcery DCC modules

Here's a sweet and short suggestion: The Imperishable Sorceress (from DCC Free RPG Day 2013) This one practically runs itself, very little tweaking needed. :) Sure it has a weird science sheen, but nothing that doesn't work. It starts by forcing the player to play the scenario, but for a 4-hour conv...

Re: Carousing Rules for DCC

I very much like the above tables, but one thing none of the authors do, is discuss their design decisions. At best, one author tells us he's running an xp for gold campaign, and so his tables are "the only way to convert gold to XP." Of course, this still doesn't say whether the tables ar...

Re: The extremity of the DCC Luck Check

It's conceptually different. Other stats are tied to... what should we call it? genetics? training? experience? ...it's all within the character, so to speak. Luck however is your position within the whims of the universe, your up to the moment place in the cosmic flow of Law and Chaos. A character...

Re: The extremity of the DCC Luck Check

You know, having a rules discussion forum really is pointless if nothing is wrong and nothing ever needs improvement...and if the solution to every problem is "just fix it yourself", that means there's nothing left to discuss. :? That approach discourages discussions leading to each new pr...

Re: The extremity of the DCC Luck Check

The die can be modified by the dice chain. In this case, reducing the die is good, and increasing it is better. Apologies, but I don't understand this answer. I mean, I do get that if some random and obscure effect tells you to roll a smaller die than d20 you do just that. And in this case it's a g...

Re: The extremity of the DCC Luck Check

To clarify a point that maybe got buried above:

Do you think a character should be able to burn Luck points on checks involving the Luck ability score? I kind of took this for granted, until I realized the full implications of the special rule used by the DCC Luck Check.

Re: The extremity of the DCC Luck Check

I searched the forums to see if this had been discussed previously. It sort of had, but not to the degree I brought up above. Here are my comments to two quotes: So whenever it just says Luck Check, without a specified DC, it's equal or under your own luck? Even for a Roll Over check? rolling the bo...

The extremity of the DCC Luck Check

Okay so unlike every other check in the game, the Luck Check features a unique mechanism: rolling a d20 under the actual Score. You want to roll low. If somehow the die size is affected by the dice chain smaller dice is suddenly good instead of bad, and the Luck modifier is not involved at all. All ...

Re: Opinions on Cleric lvl 1 spell Second Sight

It is so useless that players salivate over getting it. If you define any spell by minimum success, then, yes, many are useless. If you define success by the possibility that there somewhere exists some player that can find a use for something, then you have what I would call a "low bar"....

Re: Opinions on Cleric lvl 1 spell Second Sight

Nobody benefits from me trying to couch my words so let's just say it out load - the spell is useless. Spending 10 minutes to cast a spell, and rolling 14-23 means having to immediately right now focus on a future choice. Assuming the choice and its consequences take place within 30 minutes, you STI...

Re: Stomp the typo / Errata & FAQ

Is the 8th ed language (above, about the "Luck modifier" in a Spell Check) changed in the newest edition? Yes. Page 106 has been changed. Can I ask newbie questions? Is this errata collated anywhere? I have what I believe is called "8th printing" in softcover and PDF. It appears...

Re: Stomp the typo / Errata & FAQ

I hate to say it, but you'll find the reference to Luck is no longer a part of the book. It now says "and there may be other modifiers". It really was meant to refer to the Luck modifier from the Birth Augur chart. Ah, ok, so page 106 previously said (8th edition): "When your charact...

Re: Stomp the typo / Errata & FAQ

Regarding your citation, you'll find that it is contradicted (in that Luck is not part of the spell check) elsewhere in the rules. For example, on p. 28 of the 7th printing, "The spell check is made like any other check: roll1d20 + Personality modifier + caster level." Luck is not include...

Re: Suggestions for Frazettian Sword & Sorcery DCC modules

If memory serves, it's not that Broegan can't save his daughter -- it's that everyone has agreed to the lottery system that's in place to try to limit the damage the Hound is doing. Without it, it was showing up more often and killing multiple people each time. It's a stop-gap tactic at best, but i...

Re: Suggestions for Frazettian Sword & Sorcery DCC modules

Here's an example of the difficulties, that perhaps you all have never thought about. Let's discuss module DCC 66.5, "Doom of the Savage Kings". What would be needed to run this adventure in a faux-near Eastern locale? That is, the geography, customs, language of a pretend version of a byg...

Re: Thrown weapons & Strength modifiers

You're welcome! Also, could a halfling throw two weapons using the two weapon fighting rule for the class? Hmm. Why not let Halflings throw two daggers (or other light items) per round? I guess it just has to be a light weapon in the "second" hand, so I suppose they could throw a spear and...

Yes.

Consider the Strength modifier to be effectively ±0 at longer ranges. Higher if it used to be negative; lower if it used to be positive.
