So could I. There are a lot of obvious similarities in the book other than just being frogmen though such as using poisoned weapons, being hard to see, and leaping to attack with spears.GnomeBoy wrote:I could be wrong.

One missing from the list- Bullywugs. I'm pretty sure they are based on the frog men called Rillyti in the 1975 Karl Edward Wagner novel Bloodstone.

Re: No GenCon 2011 tourney?
I'm sad to see no DCC tourney at GenCon again this year. Howdy! It is indeed a bummer.... ...And I do not understand why there is no tourney. Several years my friends and I tried to get in, and they were ALWAYS full and additional groups/DMs were always slotted in. Is Goodman Games even going to Ge...

Almost all rpg modules are reactive too. The goblins are raiding the village. Let's stop them.jmucchiello wrote:Superheroes are reactive: Doc Doom is doing what? Let's stop him.

Re: Appendix N Recommendations and Adventuring Parties
I just don't think adventure fiction works very well with groups. It depends on the fiction. The Joe Abercrombie books I just finished reading had some rather large parties of characters through most of the stories. Best Served Cold had a great group - two fighters, a barbarian, two poisoners, and ...

How many stories mention money at all? Not many. Shopping? Hardly any at all. I can only recall the one instance in LotR when they paid something like 18 silver pennies for a horse.finarvyn wrote:While that may be true, historically, it just doesn't "feel" very Appendix N literary to me.

Re: Luck
HackMaster Basic has a pretty neat mechanic for luck although only thieves get it. They get 20+level luck points per level that they can use to alter saves and such. This goes a long way to making thieves unique.

Re: Changes due to playtests
And of course the various adventures themselves get tweaked after every game. I've run People of the Pit maybe 7 or 8 times now, and there's this one secret room that not a single group has found. Every other secret room has been found in at least one game, but not this one. I'm going to change the...

Re: Kill the Cleric?
Sure, there are a good collection of roguish types in Appendix N but there's also a good collection of heroic fantasy where do-gooders save the day for little reward. I fail to understand how anyone could say doing heroic deeds is outside the "roots of D&D". That's the dilemma of tryi...

Re: Kill the Cleric?
"Sure, I'll heal you, but first let me tell you about the power of Gorhan..." This is one of the things I like least about the way the class is usually played... but hey, that's just me. +1 Why would anyone need to proselytize in a fantasy game where the gods are all too real and usually ...

Re: A plug for two book stores (Appendix N readers take note
The next time you're in Chattanooga (seems like you're there fairly often), you must go to McKays. We have one here in Knoxville too. They are the most awesome used bookstores in the universe. Big store, big selection, high turnover. Seriously, every time I go to the one here, there's around a coupl...

Re: Kill the Cleric?
There's also a conservative side of the coin too. Cleric has been a part of D&D since the beginning - unlike the thief. Not really. The story goes that the Cleric was added as a class to combat some other guy's vampire pc. So originally, D&D only had the fighter and the magic-user. And I be...

Re: Kill the Cleric?
One thing I've thought of doing before in Basic (which has race as class like dcc) is to change the Elf from being a mage/fighter into basically a cleric and ditching the cleric class. Up the xp (say 2000 to get to 2nd), allow any armor, and any weapon. Turning works on humanoids instead of undead. ...

I'd be happier without them. There's never been anything like a cleric in any fantasy (that wasn't based on a rpg setting) that I've ever read.

What funky dice will be needed for low levels, say level 0-3? Will d14's, d16's, or d24's be necessary at those levels?

Re: Encounter Levels and Random Encounters
I keep hearing, here and elsewhere, comments that seem to include some heavy eye-rolling at the 'standard encounter' system for 3.5. Am I the only one who found the two charts -- especially Table 3-2 -- on page 49 of the DMG useful? Surely not every one is running CRs right at their party level all...

Re: Joseph Goodman speaks out on levels
The class levels all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, fighter eleven, cleric eleven, wizard eleven and... Oh, I see. And most games go up to ten? Exactly. Does that mean it's better? Is it any better? Well, it's one better, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be p...
