That's pretty much the point of it. Players learn to not rely on stats and use out of box thinking because of it. It deconstructs the usual modern D&D mindset quickly.

Re: New player - Withdrawal question

Getting an attack against someone who flees is and old-school rule, and nowhere as needlessly complicated as AoO. To begin with, you get AoO against someone leaving threatened squares or doing certain actions in them - and each frickin action has it mentioned in its description if it allows an AoO f...

Re: Introductions Thread - Join the Band!

Well, maybe not quite that long… but man, this is a BIG book. I mean, seriously, I was expecting something about as fat as the old AD&D (1E) DM's Guide. This monster is bigger than my town's phone book. You could use it for home defense, and beat somebody to death with it. It might be a big boo...

If there is one thing DCC RPG needs is some grand scale sandbox campaign setting. So sure, why not.

Re: Enlarge is OP, tell me why not!!!

Nothing is overpowered in DCC RPG, but everything is badass. Every class has some really cool stuff to play with, while also being fragile. The warrior's Mighty Deeds of Arms, the thief's luck burning, the clerics ridiculous healing ability, the wizard's spells all can have over the top results even...

No need to get stuck on wording, go with what makes sense for you. It won't break the game.

I'm actually gathering my crap for a new campaign. I have my own rules for race as race (24 of them at the moment), and elite paths for the various classes that I'm revamping.

Re: Tips on campaign building

Don't overdo it, and then it won't be that daunting. Leave out details that likely won't come up during play or can be improvised. As for art and maps, unless you are planning to publish it, don't sweat it. Make your map in Hexographer or Dungeon Painter Studio, and you are good to go. Heck, most of...

Re: Converting 5e Modules into DCC

I want to give my players a taste of playing DCC but with the familiarity and structure of a 5e style module plus some added dcc weirdness of my own making. What's the point of that? Tell them straight they are going to play DCC, tell them how it's different, and if they are still okay with it, run...

It means they use the same crit tables as player characters. Those are marked with roman numerals.

Wizards don't require patrons, they can learn magic from dusty grimoires, moldy scrolls, etc... It would be a dick move if they needed one, since not all wizards start with the Invoke Patron spell.

Re: Luck Questions

Page 95. covers the most common cases for burning luck, the rest is up to the Judge. I for one don't allow burning luck to improve rolls that aren't some kind of check or damage roll during the adventure. It was meant to save your hide or help you achieve marvelous deeds, not to be used as "bui...

That was just the writer having some fun and trying to evoke the spirit of the genre - namely, Vance's Dying Earth stories.

There are amazing level 1 adventures available for DCC RPG, like Doom of the Savage Kings and Frozen in Time. I ran both of them, they could be finished within 4-6 hours.

I would add Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun to the Appendix N list. And almost everything from Clark Ashton Smith, naturally.

Nothing keeps you from introducing them as dimensional travellers, though. Who knows what comes and goes through Ningauble's caves... Just make sure they feel they are very unique - probably the only member of their race in Nehwon!

Wherever you want. It was never developed, it left open for the Judge. Due to the assumed style of the ruins it's probably some kind of fantasy Egypt.

Welcome aboard!

While they might not contain all the listed element, I think Frozen in Time, Journey to the Center of Aerath, and The Imperishable Sorceress would fit in the campaign your description implies.
