Perhaps a custom prestige class for coglayers that actually field test the weapons that they work on would be a way around this?

Perhaps with long combat sequences we should provide 10 or 20 dice rolls. I know I got a bit thrown by the quick move to mech combat.

Glod puts his buzzaxe somewhere within easy reach (his steam gun being in the armory) and asks whether Hammer has anything on which he might draw up a schematic. Glod stays with the gearwrights. Tinkering is way more fun than getting shot at.
