Re: Kill the Cleric?

I can't imagine a sword and sorcery game without wizards paying the cost of great power, so corruption is a necessary mechanic in my opinion. I'm sure it'll make spellcasting even more memorable for the players. I have not done a full adventure yet, but I am not sure memorable is the proper term fo...

Re: Kill the Cleric?

blasphemer! *just kidding* That has always been something that has been discussed for years and years. This especially becomes true for DCC RPG with wizards being linked to supernatural patrons. Personally, I like that the clerics are separate from the Wizards and have a complete and distinctly diff...

Gygax Article

I posted this here because it seemed most appropriate, but it discusses how Gygax got dnd started.

This is an older article from before his death... but I think it is relevant to seeing how this all started!

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels

Same here. Since 1981. Not castles or wars. I've done domain management with other games. Not D&D though. Slacker! *grin* In the 1e DMG, there was a table for randomly rolling troop types. We built fortresses and kingdoms so we could roll on that table and recruit armies to fight with! But that...

Re: Have your attitudes towards DCC RPG changed since Jan. 3

My disappointment with the book started with the 1 spell per page concept. (Illustrations should be 1/4-1/6 page or full plates.) The 5 level cut off is just inevitable because of the artwork requirements. Not to put words in your mouth... But I think I agree with what you are saying, you would rat...

Re: Questions about the Beta version

Levels 1-10 sounds artificial, inorganic, machine-like, and arbitrary. Levels 1-5 sounds like half of 1-10, and thus not a complete game. Actually, 10 works well with a system where you acquire the ability to cast a new spell level at 1,3,5,7, and 9th levels. How about levels 1-7? Consider: 3. In t...

Re: Have your attitudes towards DCC RPG changed since Jan. 3

Personally I have no problem with the level range as I'm more attuned to Traveller (no levels), Trail of Cthulhu (no levels) and Call of Cthulhu (slow progression). In those games it's about roleplaying not leveling up like some sort of computer game. I remember the awe of playing when I first star...

Re: Wizards versus Warriors. Can Balance be found in Appendi

I also like the mechanic of variable bleed out. Where you lose d6-2 HP per turn. Note: Yes, you can gain a hp, keep the same, or lose 1-4 hp each round. The variable time keeps the party on their toes. A first level character could go from -2 to -6 (average max) in one roll. Or stick around for 5 r...

Re: What would a 3rd level DCC look like in 3e?

I took a few minutes out and put together a brief spreadsheet. There is one tab for each spell level. This table gives a percentage chance of how many times you could cast the spell (on average) before you fail a spell check. https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AmZ_VdoPd0ZtdHlBUTlEVjJzVDRzTFUwS...

Re: What would a 3rd level DCC look like in 3e?

Let me put something out here to clarify some details for your example, as these details will change the calculations that you utilized. As always, everything is still subject to change: 1. A wizard knows 4 spells at first level. All four spells are in memory each day and they can be cast until your...

Re: What is a "level"?

I hope the xp is equal for the classes, given all the talk about 1 level in DCC being equal to around 2-3 level in D&D. That's a huge difference for people in a party who are travelling together. Plus, modules are labeled by level. What does that mean in a world where xp amounts mean different ...

Re: Wizards versus Warriors. Can Balance be found in Appendi

* The "bleed out" rule: When reduced to 0 hp, you have [class level] rounds to "bleed out." If magically healed during that time, you can survive, but you permanently lose 1 hp of stamina. I've used this in play and I like the fact that it sets a "clock" for reaction t...

Re: Wizards versus Warriors. Can Balance be found in Appendi

I know that my recollection of DnD has for a very long time had negative HP's... so I know my opinions are very much colored by them. But I would like to vote for keeping the negative HP's. They provide a very solid mechanic to the game. I know Joseph is not in favor of them as it provides a large n...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels

Without reading the rules, it is my understanding that the levels are not equivalent to earlier edition levels. From the various forum posts and such, I believe that Joseph was attempting to scale down the game that kept getting upped and upped each time a new release of DnD came out. By scaling bac...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels

I would like to put my 2cents worth in for keeping the DCC at 10 levels out of the gates. I would rather have a single book that covers the core of the game. 5 levels would be just too restrictive for 50% of the potential DCC players out there. Everyone enjoys leveling up and getting new powers and/...

Stealth Chart Example --- special note: Some creatures are exceptionally perceptive --- subtract a creatures HD from the stealth check to see how perceptive they are. 1 - Critical skill failure 2-11 - If this is a moonless night in the woods, you successfully hide. 12-14 - You can only hide in deep...

Weapon Damage Ranges

There have been a large number of discussions based on HP's... armor damage reduction and balance for the game. Weapons (at least from the play test) seem to be inline with the damage from the weapons in 3e. Not all were the same, but we can use that as a baseline for the purpose of this discussion....

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels

I will have to say that I am not totally thrilled that characters are reaching named levels by level 6 and are expected to open schools, build castles and stuff like that. I always thought that was based more on RP than any sort of game threshold. In RPing, any warrior with the proper money, charism...

Re: The forgotten class...

I really like the idea that I can have a "thief" who is a backstabbing, ninja guy and another who is a loremastering, trap disarmer in the same party. The first one is good at sneaking around and stabbing people. The other is good at knowing stuff that needs to be known, reading stuff tha...

Re: Warriors and MDoA's

The target # is 3 or higher. So it get progressively easier for a Warrior to achieve a MDoA. 1. d3 - 33% chance 2. d4 - 50% chance etc... Too frequent for me. 3 on a d8 is 75%. That's only 6th level. Starts out too good and gets better real fast. I could be wrong though. Will have to see it in acti...

Re: Warriors and MDoA's

So does MDoA refer to the stunt or to the die? I'd have called the die: BAD. In 3e, you have a Base Attack Bonus, so the die would be your Base Attack Die. I'm not understanding the stunt system. If a 1st level fighter rolls a d3, what does he need to pull off a stunt? A 3 I suppose? That's 33%. So...

Re: The forgotten class...

In that way, the "Thief" class can be anything they want to be. Want a Hunter? Take a Skillmonkey and roll some SDAs on Tracking? Want a Silver-Tongued Devil? Roll some SDAs on Bluff. Want a Loremaster? Roll some SDAs on History, Religion and Arcana! Probably should be some sort of "...

Re: The forgotten class...

Am I right in that the type of thief in DCC is influenced by alignment ? i recall that being said somewhere I think I remember hearing that, but I do not have enough information to confirm or deny that. I do have a question... Each of the other classes have a cool new mechanic, but the Thief has no...
