Dying Earth

DCC Dying Earth is both a sourcebook and a setting for the Dungeon Crawl Classics Role-Playing Game that offers a portal to the singular world of The Dying Earth novels by Jack Vance. Officially licensed by his estate, the Kickstarter will launch later in 2020 and the product will release in 2021...!

Any guess as to what will make the setting different from other DCC product lines?

When I think of Dying Earth, I think of
(1) Colorful word use; needing a thesaurus to figure out what Vance is saying
(2) Characters wandering through magical situations, similar in vibe to Dumas' "Three Musketeers" only with magic.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

@Finarvyn We tried to give some answers to this question at last year's Gen Con What's New with Goodman Games:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7n4nfAG9Wpw
Discussion begins at the 10-minute mark.

Hope it sufficiently tantalizes!

i have played in three playtests up to now and can vouch that it really captures the feel of the vance's setting. while verbosity is up to the individual player luck mechanic, especially in relation to the wayfarer class (one of four new classes), vancian magic (yes, vancian magic), grudge tokens and new spells make for total DE immersion.

i was blown away to the point that i feel dcc adventures captured PvP action of DE to super great extent. i don't know if i can speak of specific. there was no NDA but than again...

Suffice to say for now: I loved it and it is substantial (more than Lankhmar) reworking of DCC rules.

Yeah, don't spoil too much. We didn't sign NDAs but if we reveal too much it'll not only spoil the reveal for Goodman but we might not be welcome at playtests anymore. ;)

vort you were epitome of a DE character in that playtest we did together.

you eloped admirably while putting whole kingdom to sleep yet losing the one thing we came to get. i mean it was literally vanceian ending down to a deodand.

i had my doubts about how well will DCC emulate DE but after that all of them were shattered and burnt by excellent prismatic spray!

Catseye, you reveal yourself! haha! Thanks for the generous words. It was a fantastic playtest group and I thought it was a wonderful ending in spite of leaving empty handed. It felt very Vancian indeed and you played your character like a pro. I had been worried going in that the setting might be too above me (though I've long enjoyed Jack Vance, especially the Lyonesse trilogy, I've only recently read DE so I don't know it that well) but it played easily and felt like being in the novels. I went from being unsure about the setting to really looking forward to its release.

np. can't wait for the finished product.

in a way DE now even seems more perfect fit for a DCC than Lankhmar.

let's keep fingers crossed for DCC Young Kingdoms in the future.

wow, just saw on goodman twitch channel covers for DE. we already knew that doug hit a home run on this one but the list of creators slated for three main books (inside boxed set) and adventures (lankhmar style) is incredible. go there and check art by erol otus, russ nicholson and SANJULIAN!

Those covers are absolutely sick. I watched the twitch stream of the DCC playtest for Dying Earth and the city with the colored hats was just perfect. I will definitely be in on this package day 1!

Now that the "Empire of the East" setting book is almost complete, I'm guessing the DE kickstarter will be coming up soon. Looking forward to this as I missed out on Lankhmar.

You're right @Gnomeboy. Completely true. I meant missing out on the Lankhmar Kickstarter. But I agree that my comment doesn't make sense.

So what's up with the fabled DCC Dying Earth kickstarter?

Is it still slated for 2020, or is the kickstarter campaign being moved to 2021? Just asking for a friend...

There was an interesting discussion about it during the "Bride of Cyclops Con - What's New With Goodman Games" starting at 1:19:30.

Joseph talked about finishing the editing in January 2021. My guess is a Kickstarter in Spring or early Summer 2021... Anybody else have something more precise?
