Wizards and Padded Armor

So correct me if I'm wrong: Under armor, it says that the check penalty applies to spell checks for Wizards, but since padded armor doesn't have a penalty, that means Wizards can wear it with no problems. Right?

Yes.

There's no "hidden" drawback to using armor. If you can live with a -0 penalty, go for it ;)

Yep. +1 to AC and an increased fumble die -- so maybe not no problems, but not too many problems...?

While a Wizard will seldom make attack rolls (and as long as he doesn't, he won't feel the increased fumble die*) it is worth mentioning for the sake of completeness. Thank you.

*) rolling a 1 on a casting check may be many things, but one thing it is not, is making you roll on the fumble tables. Yes, the rules do call rolling a 1 a "fumble"**, but the actual results of rolling that 1 include things like rolling for corruption, taint, and disapproval. Never on the fumble tables where your fumble die from armor comes into play.

**) this is imprecise terminology and the rules would be better off not using the word "fumble" in the generic sense when it does not specifically refer to the fumble tables modified by your armor's fumble die. There are only two such instances, and it is disappointing these still remain in the text after so many printings:
"Any time a cleric fumbles a spell check" (page 357) replace with "Any time a cleric rolls a natural 1 on a spell check..."

A section on page 106:
Criticals and fumbles: A spell check result of a natural 20
is a critical success. The caster receives an additional bonus
to his check equal to his caster level. Compare to the casting
table for that specific spell for the result.
A spell check result of a natural 1 is always a failure. A result
of 1 may also result in corruption or disapproval, as
described below.

So it isn't really criticals and fumbles, since the fumble rules, tables and dice never come into play. Much better would be to call the bolded part

Criticals, corruption, taint and disapproval: A spell check result of a natural 20...

Yeah, if only D&D 1974 hadn't used the word Level for like 5 different things... 8)

Drawing attention to the state of ttrpg rules design fifty years ago is not the flattering comparison you think it is.

I love DCC, but there is zero reason for the many inconsistent and confusing passages persisting even after eight (8) printings.

Can't say I was trying to flatter anything nor anybody...

Correct, if there's no check to the armor, then there's no check to be applied to the spell casting.

This dramatically limits Wizards' armor options if they don't want to have their spells messed with, but you can cut them a break sometimes by letting them raid a defeated boss Wizard's wardrobe and find, say, an enchanted robe that functions as padded armor +2.

That's usually what the little curly mark with the dot at the bottom means. (for reference: "?")

Why would you say that a Wizard seldom makes attack rolls?

And seriously, your posts are crazy hostile. Tone it down.

I don't think you're interested in having a discussion with me, so bye.
