Sword Magic Typo?

Post by BanjoJohn »

On the table of spell results.
1 is "lost and corruption"
2-15 is "failure, spell not lost"
all the results for 16+ are "Per above, and table 8-4"

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but doesn't that mean it is technically a "failure" and ALSO a success that you check on table 8-4? At least, that's my interpretation that the "per above" literally means the spell results from the above results on the table, instead of referring you to the "General" section of the spell details.

Could "all the results for 16+ are "Per above, and table 8-4" pertain to tables 8-1 through 8-4 on page 367 in the magic sword section?

Every time I've seen any reference to "per above" in a spell result table, it is referencing the previous result on the specific results of that spell's table.

At a quick glance (which is all I've been able to give it unfortunately), or even careful perusal of the spells section I agree with you. It does read as "see previous entry" style writing. Adjudicating the spell as written would always result in a useless (non-)magic sword.

I've been meaning to dive into creating magic swords via NPC wizards, and this seems like a perfect opportunity to examine all the relevant info and attempt it based on how the rules present it, finding holes in the rules and then determine the best way to patch up those holes and move forward.

I've actually got a DCC session planned this weekend, but with only a single player. I'll suggest that we ad-lib a simple scenario involving the creation of a magic sword and see where the rules lead us.

Yeah, it usually means that at the higher dice total, you get the effects of previous, lower-level spell success outcomes AND additional bonus effects.

No DCC this weekend, unfortunately, but I did get some time to read over the spell description and Sword Magic section.

I think the key to understanding this, is that first off, it is a misleading typo. We are accustomed to reading entries like this as a result relating to other results within the table.

Second, after reading the spell and Sword Magic section: "Creating a Magic Sword" on page 366, the typo should be corrected to say "confer with the spell description guidelines (page 229-230) and consult Table 8-4" where each spell check result correlates to a result on 8-4.

I also note that a Magic Sword with any to hit bonus at all must be created by a wizard minimum level of 5, and depending on the exact powers and abilities, could cost from 5,000gp up to 1,500,000gp, and may have extraordinary adventuring hooks for completing special tasks, travel to exotic locales, gathering rare materials, and sacrifices for abilities to work.
