Patron Bond

Post by MajorLeeAwesome »

When a character first casts Patron Bond, do they know which Patron they are contacting, or is it random?

I think the idea is that there is a "Patron Bond" out there for each Patron -- if you find such a spell, it's for a specific Patron. The way you contact Bobugbubilz is NOT the same way you contact Sezrekan. Presumably they could study the spell they've found and know who it lets them contact, or if they've developed the spell themselves, they know who they want to reach out to...

But there could also be spells that just let you beseech higher powers, or that create a 'signal' that only higher powers would be likely to detect. And maybe at that point, it's first come, first served, or it ends up with multiple Patrons evaluating the Wizard and challenging each other for service.

Of course, all of that is on the narrative level. On the mechanical level, running it that the Wizard finds or has the Patron Bond spell and letting them choose which Patron they're contacting is perfectly fine.

Hello,

In the spell Patron Bond (result 28-29) it is written :

" The gift is a single patron spell, selected from the patron’s spell list. Each time he casts this patron spell or invoke patron, the caster is indebted to his patron, who will call in the debt at some point. "

And further on, for the 30-31 result : " The caster can cast this spell once per day in place of a casting of invoke patron. "

If i understand correctly it means that the possible "offered" patron spell(s) doesn't work like the other spells of the mage because the mage can only cast it once a day. I find this strange, do you have an explanation or a point of view on this point ?

Patron spells are not spells that work the same was as magic the character has researched and created themselves. Patron spells are dependent upon the Patron lending aid in the moment -- they are being invoked, after all. Hence there is a limit and there is a debt that goes with 'casting' such spells.

Okay, so we don't have to take into account the "lost" results in the tables of patron spells ? Anyway I like the idea.
