For my part, as a Judge, I chose to allow level 0 elf characters to choose a mithril weapon, a bit like a legacy, a link to their long lineage. This may also lead to some dirty and envious looks from their human adventure companions. I don't think it will throw off the funnel and it will make the different and strange aspect of elves even more concrete.

(I'm running a Conanesque sword sorcery campaign in a world with only humans. I use Marzio Muscedere's excellent suggestions to reuse/reskin the demihuman classes as Cultist, Pirate, Soldier!)
