Savage Kings

Post by finarvyn »

I wasn't sure where to put this, but "Judges' Forum" seemed to fit because it relates to a potential campaign setting.

Beware of potential spoilers!

. . .

. . .

. . .

I ran Tomb of the Savage Kings for Free RPG Day yesterday and the module suggests that it could be tied to DCC66.5 - Doom of the Savage Kings. During the adventure the players got thrown back into time, and the module suggests that DCC77.5 The Tower out of Time could be a way for players to return to their proper timeline. Then today I read something on FaceBook (thanks to Jen Brenkman) that there is an old d20 Goodman adventure called DCC17 - Legacy of the Savage Kings that Harley Stroh suggests could time in with Doom, and Goodman produced DCC17.5 War of the Witch Queen which is a prequel to Legacy. This would seem to suggest that as many as five Goodman modules might link together into a coherent campaign.

Chronologically, in order of publication:
(1) Legacy of the Savage Kings (d20; levels 4-6, which is more like 2-3 in DCC terms, I think)
(2) War of the Witch Queen (d20; levels 7-9, which is more like 4-5 in DCC terms, I think)
(3) Doom of the Savage Kings (DCC; level 1)
(4) Tower Out of Time (DCC; level 2)
(5) Tomb of the Savage Kings (DCC; level 2)

Now, I haven't run War/Legacy and it's been quite a while since I ran Doom, so my memory could be faulty but a sequence like this suggests itself.
(1) Doom of the Savage Kings
(2) Tomb of the Savage Kings
(3) Tower Out of Time
(4) War of the Witch Queen
(5) Legacy of the Savage Kings

Feel free to comment or elaborate. :D

Nice, thanks for this!

Is Temple the same as Tomb, or are there two different new Savage Kings modules?

Ouch. Total brain cramp. The new module is Tomb and not Temple. Fixed my original post, and thanks for the catch. :)

Stephen here (author of Tomb...)
FWIW, all of the tie-ins to Doom are intentional. I had started writing it as my "Mummy movie homage" adventure. All good mummy movies have the "flashback in time" to how the mummy (then mortal.. usually a priest) becomes cursed. When I started thinking about how to create that "dynasty" I got the idea to just "borrow" one from canon (i.e. the Savage Kings). I reached out to Harley to ask if he'd be OK with it and he agreed. Once he did that the story took off into a completely new direction making the project super fun to write (I created the Moon Spear as a McGuffin, the Andoheb becomes a brother of Ulfheonar, the Witch YMae comes back, and, of course, the Hound...) The idea the PC's themselves could be responsible for unleashing the Hound onto poor hapless Hirot brings my heart great joy.

Hope you guys enjoyed the adventure.

[edit]
PS, I was deep into playtesting before I acquired Legacy so I wasn't able to introduce any tie-ins. Maybe if it ever gets a re-print I'll tweak some text to include more Legacy elements.
