i have been rereading 2000AD slaine comics and while it is obvious howard hommage it manages to invert s&s tropes and introduce, gasp, feminist hero while retaining all the charm of the muscle-bound barbarian yarn.

I've been a long time fan of Richard Corben. His graphic novels Bloodstar and Neverwhere are definitely Appendix N comic books. Also look for his Creepy collection as well as his Edgar Allen Poe collection, they are fantastic. He's worked on a lot of other stuff too; Hellboy, Batman, Conan, Luke Cage, etc.
