Go to sleeeeeep....zzzz

Post by RevTurkey »

So, just ran The Emerald Enchanter.

Without spoiling as best as I can:

The group took the shorter way to the climactic battle with the Enchanter.

2 Warriors entered the room and were promptly vapourised by a rather excellent magic missile.

The group's elf enters, uses 19 points of spellburn...gets a total spellcheck of 40!

zZzZz and that was that. 1500ft of super amazing 100 year sleep spell.

I thought it unfair to make up some excuse, so I just said fair enough, it works.

Only the 'special' thing below was immune...and because of the range, I ruled that it affected the whole place.

Gobsmacked. Still, we had a lot of fun.

My players are really digging DCC and the open ended nature of things that can happen.

I am not saying one way of gaming is better than another but I do enjoy the sense of excitement each time we play as even the DM has utterly no idea what is coming.

Its your game, so you can do whatever you like. But I would limit it to the same room , or at least line of sight. Not through walls & closed doors, multiple floors, etc.
To defend: This is the Pact.
But when life loses its value,
and is taken for naught -
then the Pact is to Avenge.

It said 500 yards...for a 100 years. Save of 40+ only if over 4HD.

I was happy to let it work after two of their favourite characters just got killed. I love it when extraordinary things happen, good or bad. That's why I like DCC. It doesn't restrain events in service of 'game balance' something I feel is often given too much attention in many games.

My players and me had fun and this will be a memorable game, something very hard to achieve after 30+ years of the same old same old.

Like you said, each to their own. I hope you are having as much fun as I am these days with roleplaying. I bet you are if you are playing DCC, whichever way you go at it. It is a good system but the modules are what sell it for me. Terrific stuff. I am really excited about running 'Beyond the Black Gate' when we eventually get to it.

I am being very liberal with my experience awards...

Play an adventure...go up a level. This works out both good and bad.

The good is that, my players are worried about corruption and stuff like that, as they are the kind that gets very attached to their 'visions' of characters. The good thing about super fast progression is that they ending up with less corruption events etc...of course the bad is that...that stuff, for me anyway is a lot of fun. Still, it has worked out as a great way to introduce my players to the system without too much moaning, something that comes up a lot from many DMs with groups used to 3.5/Pathfinder players.

Anyway, I am rambling on. Short version...good fun.

Nice one, Joseph, Harley and the team.

I would personally rule that it takes actions to spellburn more than one point. I forget the rule, is spellburn done via blood/self inflicted damage or are there other ways?

My player said he thrust his dagger into himself and punctured his lung...
That may or may not affect his character in future, depends how it goes.

I am not looking for any sort of agreement in my ruling here :)

I am happy with the way it played out. Just sharing

I, too am very free with the xp awards (too lenient I think at times!) but the players have no fear of corruption effects. The wizard has said if he gets afflicted with horns or antlers as a corruption effect, he will just saw them down like Hellboy does!
It seemed the faster the game went, the more risks they took, especially during the tough encounters. If they need light, they will of course light a torch and not use a spell, unless they are forced to. I don't think they are foolhardy but I have found that they are not averse to taking risks at all. They just throw themselves into the game with a wild abandon.

I really liked Beyond the Black Gate. I hope you will have a lot of fun playing it too.

Cheers Flexi :)

...and thanks to the others for the comments btw.

I am building my house of cards ready to come tumbling down with my easy going approach. I fully expect it to go horribly wrong and for the players to find ways to abuse the system but this is our first proper spell at playing DCC and I want to see what they get up to without restraint so that the next time we come to the game I will know what to expect and tinker with etc...

This week...

Jewels of the Carnifex.

How do we get across that (at the start) chasm?

Er, Spider Climb...from an Elf with +2d casting (genuine rolled mercurial).

A d30 rolled...28...plus bonuses..ah I see, woah.

Oh look now I have a group of players with webslinging, wallcrawling, entagling superpowers!

Gobsmacked. They all grew four extra limbs and swarmed that adventure.

Went pretty smoothly although personally as DM, not my fave of the sessions.

That said, completely bonkers results from spellcasting. Good fun.

This system certainly has its own take and style on the genre!
