Kylessa gets closer the assembled figures, and tips the helmet off one of them. A simple curved shape forms the "head", like the first few straps of a basket being made. However, it is crisscrossed with what looks like strips of bacon or something similar. They seem firmly affixed.

The lot of you continue to be lashed by the rain and wind.

Give me an Agility check for Obadiah, please.

She shrinks back from the bizarre sight of the "guards" moving toward Obadiah and Hodin.

The casting of Spider Climb with the roll I made should last 10 minutes, along with the mercurial effect of extra eyes. Just let me know when the time has elapsed, GB.

It's only been like 2 weeks, so I think it's still up...

Obadiah carefully picks his way down the stairs under the trap door, Hodin and Kylessa following a bit behind...

At the bottom of the stairs is a room formed by the walls of the gatehouse. In the back wall is a portcullis, presumably attached to the windlass above.. In the front wall is the drawbridge, drawn up.

In front of the drawbridge stand two figures, much like the figures above, but their torsos are mounted on a four-legged base. They have red-dyed yarn or string for hair. As Obadiah sees them, they are motionless for all of two seconds before they turn, raising clubs, the meat strips attached to them flexing and twitching, moving their hinged legs to turn them to face you and they advance!

Roll Initiative, everyone!

I got a 12 for them, so if you beat that, go ahead and describe what you do...

Clearly unnerved by the manikins' sudden movement, Kylessa jumps a bit and fires a wild shot with her sling at one of their heads,

INIT Roll 1d20+2=18

Obadiah notices the first flicker of movement in the room and chucks one of his javelins at it, attempting to pin whatever the creature is to the floor.

Deed roll 1d4=1

Attack roll 1d20+1=4 (ugh)

Obadiah's javelin goes slightly wide as the contraption creatures move forward a bit faster than expected. Kylessa beans the one in the lead with a stone as it takes a swing at Obadiah!

Atk 20, damage 7!
[not a natural 20, so no crit, FYI]

The second contraption creature moves alongside it's mirror companion and reaches past Obadiah to strike at Hodin (2nd on the stairs, so it attacks with a d16 for the reaching).

Atk 15, damage 3.

Hodin is up, then Kylessa and Obadiah.

They are mostly blocking the way into the room, by the way...

And Warriors: DON'T FORGET YOUR DEEDS!

Hodin attempts to strikes the one that hit him. His attempted deed is a pushback - attempting to push the contraption back into the room so we can gain entry rather than be blocked.

DEED 1d4=1
ATTACK 1d20=13 + 1 = 14 (not sure if the "on higher ground" bonus applies here, if so total is 15)
DAMAGE ROLL = 2+1+1 = 4

Murmuring an incantation, Kylessa quickly produces a knife and pricks her finger. She then pops her bloodied digit into the mouth of her doll, nursing it on her Strength to power her spells once more...

Spellcheck 14+2=16 (spellburned 1 STR for a lost spell)

...and a single burning missile whistles into the leading manikin!

dmg 1d4+2+6

Obadiah lets out a stream of curses as the club strikes him, and lashes out with his spear, aiming low in an attempt to strike the thing and then flip it over on its back like a crab.

Deed roll 1d4=4
Atk roll 1d20+5=17
Dmg roll 1d8+5=8

Hodin crashes his sword down on the 2nd contraption, cutting through bamboo, wood, and meat strips alike!
[I use the Dice Chain for most things, so +1 for higher ground, but -1 for reaching past your ally in a cramped space...]

Kylessa feeds her doll and launches a missile into the leading contraption as Obadiah brings his spear up into it's workings -- between the two strikes, the creature is flipped up into the air, tumbling as it flies into it's constituent parts, in a tangle of wicker, yarn, meat, and carved wooden gears.

The second thing, now the only thing, turns to Obadiah and lashes out with his club-hand.

Atk 9 - no hit!

You're up!

Kylessa cries out delighted at the demise of the construct: "Good one, boys! We got 'em on the ropes!"

She lobs another stone at the remaining animated horror...

att+2+6
..but misses by a country mile.

Hodin will attempt the same action/deed on the remaining contraption: striking it with his longsword and using his deed to push it backward (or to the ground).

Deed roll 1d4 = 1
Atk roll 1d20+1+1 = 22 (rolled a Nat 20)
Dmg roll 1d8+1+1 = 9

Hodin hits the thing with such a brutally savage strike that he knocks it to pieces, which clatter to the stone ground of the gatehouse.

Beyond your collective breathing, all is silent in the stone room. The portcullis leading into the estate is down, it's windlass above, back on the roof. The drawbridge is up, likewise blocking the entrance from outside the estate.

Strips of meat twitch their last twitch before you on the floor.

Kylessa enthusiastically claps Hodin and Obadiah on the back, grinning furiously.

"Good show, gentlemen!" Then, quietly, "Why do you suppose the other two didn't attack?"

Considering this (and their responses) for a minute, she shrugs and begins collecting a sample of the twitchy meat.

Heh, "twitchy meat", heh heh...

"Who can say? Strange creatures... err... contraptions, perhaps? Nonetheless, I say we should chuck em off the wall before touching that windlass, just to be safe."

He massages his bruised sword-arm and shoulder as he makes a quick pass around the room, checking for anything valuable (INT Check 1d20-1=17, if you want it, plus any bonuses he might get for being a tax-collector).

The room is spartan, and checking it in detail reveals that it must see little use, cobwebs and wind-swept detritus abound and a layer of dust, dirt and grime coats the floor, bar a few faint carriage tracks of some age.

Pushing the figures on the roof over the wall poses no problem, and the windlass can be turned easily enough despite its apparent disuse.

Beyond the inner gate, now open, lays the rain-lashed peninsula, rocky, uneven, wending it’s way down to the sea...

In what manner do you proceed?
